Amy Schumer Had to Fight for Equal Pay

The comedian was initially paid $11 million compared to the $20 million for Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle.

Netflix likes to spend money almost as much as its users like to share their passwords with 27 of their closest friends. While we appreciate the money they throw down to get Shonda Rhimes to jump ship or bring award-winning movies and shows to the streaming service so we don’t have to leave our beds ever again, they’ve also got a bad habit we need to call them out on so, here we go.

Netflix, please stop upholding sexist double standards when it comes to paying your talent. Seriously, it’s not cute. It’s been revealed by Variety that when the streaming service handed out paychecks to some of the world’s most famous comedians to create comedy specials for the platform, things were a bit off. While Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle were both paid a truly insane $20 million per special, Amy Schumer was initially paid only $11 million for The Leather Special.

I know I know. She has that whole “being a woman” thing going on and it totally drags down her marketability compared to someone like noted transphobia-enthusiast Dave Chappelle, but really? In this economy?

Luckily, Schumer did what she does best and clapped back at the Netflix executives, who then gave her “significantly more compensation” in comparison to Chappelle and Rock’s paychecks, because it’s 2017. At a time when women—and especially women of color—are fighting to get paid the same amount as men, it’s time to speak out and get that coin.
