Gay Talese Wants to Talk To Kevin Spacey, ‘Feels Sad’ For Him

He also said he hates Anthony Rapp for ruining Spacey’s career.

The saying goes that good things never last, but we were hoping that something right could. After Netflix itself, several celebrities, and countless other people spoke out against the sexual harassment allegations that continue to come out surrounding Kevin Spacey, it was only a matter of time before someone took his side.

Last night at the New York Public Library’s Library Lions Gala, famed writer Gay Talese sympathized with Spacey. “I would like to talk to Kevin Spacey,” he told Vanity Fair. “I feel so sad, and I hate that actor that ruined this guy’s career… So, O.K., it happened 10 years ago… Jesus, suck it up once in a while!”

Maybe Talese hasn’t been keeping up with the news. Maybe he doesn’t know that, while actor Anthony Rapp was the first to come forward with allegations regarding Spacey, he didn’t single-handedly ruin Spacey’s career—Spacey’s repeated reprehensible behavior did that. “I would like to ask [Spacey] how it feels to lose a lifetime of success and hard work all because of 10 minutes of indiscretion 10 years or more ago.”

Sorry, Talese, but Spacey’s “lifetime of success” was accompanied by a lifetime of indiscretion, not just 10 minutes, as is chronicled by the people who continue to come forward. Talese tried to justify his views by saying everyone “at one time or another did something we’re ashamed of.” He’s not wrong, but that doesn’t absolve anyone of the consequences.
