Jenny Durkan to Become Seattle’s First Openly Gay Woman Mayor

Jenny Durkan, the country's first openly gay U.S. attorney, is leading the Seattle mayoral race by 61 percent.

With about half the ballots counted in the Seattle mayoral race, Jenny Durkan, the country’s first openly gay U.S. attorney, is leading by 61 percent.

The Seattle election season has been a tumultuous one, with former mayor Ed Murray resigning and 21 candidates clashing heads in the race for the mayoral title. Durkan’s chief opponent, Cary Moon, is still hopeful with many ballots yet to be accounted for, but, as Durkan said in The Seattle Times‘ report: “I know there are a lot more votes to be counted. But I have to tell you: We are feeling really, really good about where we are.”

The last time Seattle elected a woman as mayor was Bertha Knight Landes in 1926. While her resume doesn’t include time in political office, it’s still quite impressive—she was appointed U.S. attorney under President Obama.

Durkan continued, saying, “We really can show what it looks like when progressive values are put into action. Donald Trump, keep your hands off Seattle.”
