Lady Gaga Joins Joe Biden in New Sexual Assault PSA

"It's On Us."

Following this month’s Harvey Weinstein sexual assault allegations and viral social media movement “Me Too,” Lady Gaga and former Vice-President Joe Biden have teamed up once again to fight against sexual assault.

In their new PSA for the Obama Administration’s “It’s On Us” campaign, the pair encourages viewers to intervene in situations where consent wasn’t or cannot be given, and to ditch the current culture of blaming or shaming for one that offers support, and even encouragement, to speak out.

Gaga, a sexual assault survivor herself, has fought against sexual assault for the larger part of her career. The star wrote the Oscar-nominated “Till It Happens To You” for The Hunting Ground, a 2015 documentary about sexual assault on college campuses.

“I am a sexual assault survivor and I know the effects, the aftermath, the trauma,” Gaga said in the PSA. “Psychological, physical, mental—it can be terrifying, waking up every day and feeling unsafe in your own body. But we’re here to remind you that it’s important to reach out to someone in your life that you can trust, and to know that they will be there to help you. There will be someone to listen.”

Biden has fought the fight against sexual assault his entire political career. Dating back to the early ’90s, the former Senator enacted the Violence Against Women Act and, most recently, the White House Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual Assault.

“We want to make it clear it’s on us,” Biden added. “It’s on everyone to intervene to stop abuse when they see it and when they hear about. No man has a right to raise a hand on a woman for any reason other than self-defense, ever.  Period.”

The campaign was spearheaded by Biden and former President Barack Obama back in 2014 to raise awareness and fight against sexual assault on college campuses. By taking the campaign’s official pledge, “It’s On Us” members commit to helping create a culture of consent, bystander interaction, and survivor support.

While Biden has been out of the White House for 10 months, he seems to still be cleaning up its bullshit. With Betsy Devos’ recent attempt to reverse the Obama Administration’s anti-sexual assault policy Title IX, the video was a deserved slap-in-the-face to the current administration.
