Top LGBT rights group Lambda Legal announced that they will sue President Trump over his proposal to ban transgender people from serving in the military, declaring, “see you in court, President Trump.”
Trump took to Twitter last week to announce his decision to ban transgender people from serving openly in the military. The announcement came with no formal guidance and the Pentagon said it would continue to allow transgender people to serve until it received new direction from the White House.
“Trump’s tweets last week announcing a ban on transgender individuals serving openly in the U.S. military was turned into a ‘guidance’ policy for implementation that passed muster with the White House Counsel’s office Friday night,” The Los Angeles Blade reported late Friday night. The official policy, called “A Guidance Policy for Open Transgender Service Phase Out,” is expected to be delivered to Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis for review.
Lambda legal denounced the policy as a “mean-spirited and discriminatory attack” on the LGBT community.
“Lambda Legal has a long history of fighting for LGBT service members and, teaming up with OutServe-SLDN, we’re more than ready to fight like hell again,” Sasha Buchert, a staff attorney for the group, wrote on its website. “See you in court, President Trump.”
Some Republican lawmakers, including Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), the chairman of the powerful Senate Armed Services Committee, blasted Trump’s announcement of the discriminatory policy.
“Any American who meets current medical and readiness standards should be allowed to continue serving,” he said.
Admiral Paul Zukunft, the commandant of the Coast Guard, declared that he “will not turn my back” on a transgender soldier.
“I reached out personally to Lt. Taylor Miller, who was featured on the cover of The Washington Post last week,” Zukunft told the audience earlier this week during his appearance at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington.
“If you read that story, Taylor’s family has disowned her,” he said. “Her family is the United States Coast Guard. And I told Taylor, ’I will not turn my back. We have made an investment in you, and you have made an investment in the Coast Guard, and I will not break faith.”
