‘It’s not gay!’ Advert that tackles homophobia goes viral

An advert about the word ‘gay’ has gone viral.

Rainbow Youth, a national LGBT campaign in New Zealand, has launched their first ever advert.  The campaign aims to stop people using the word “gay” with a negative connotation – and it’s brilliant.

The video has now been watched almost 200,000 times.

“We’re SUPER stoked to finally share with you our very first national ad campaign!”

“We chose to address something small that contributes to much larger issues – homophobia, biphobia and transphobia,” the group said on Facebook.

The advert tells the story of one man, Nigel, reacting to an incident being labelled “gay”.

When the other man drops his food he says the incident has been “gay”.

Nigel then responds – in a bid to explain the situation – that “It’s deeply disappointing, but it’s not gay.”

Another farmer, Steve, then walks by carrying his new sheep.

He makes a very matter-of-fact admission that he is “quite gay”, something Nigel did not know.

The film has had a huge reaction on social media with the video shared more than 3,000 times already.

It has also been shared some 400 times on Twitter.

And it seems like the advert is already working.

One user wrote: “Already – overheard two 11 year olds talking today. One said something was so gay, the other one shot back: is it gay though? It’s working!”

Many users have celebrated the point of the advert, with some parents saying they will now endeavour to teach their own children about not using the word “gay”.
