One Million (backwards) Moms Boycott Disney Over Gay Character

These days it seems like brands and companies can’t even so much as show same-sex individuals hugging without facing a “boycott” from One Million Moms. The group, who takes it upon themselves to decide what is decent and allowable for children to see on TV, is often vocal whenever a show or network takes steps, large or small, toward inclusivity and education.

The target of the group’s latest boycott is, of course, Disney Channel. Earlier this week when it was confirmed that Cyrus, one of the main characters on Disney’s popular show, Andi Mack, would begin having feelings for a boy that would eventually lead to him coming out to his friends, 1MM reacted with an alarmist, dramatic boycott petition.

“I do not agree with the adult content you are pushing on families and children in programs such as ‘Andi Mack,’” reads the petition. “Please cancel this controversial series immediately. You will not have my support as long as you continue to veer away from family-friendly entertainment.”

The petition tears further into the show and Cyrus’ upcoming gay storyline, saying that such characters and their stories aren’t suitable for children.

“One might question why Disney Channel feels the need to pursue such programming,” it reads. “What is wrong with having family-friendly content that is acceptable for all ages or even leaving a couple of networks solely for children’s entertainment? Disney channel is gradually becoming another Freeform Network. As one of only a few channels catering to children, it cannot possibly be that Disney Channel has a financial need for more adult viewers.”

Someone must have neglected to informed 1MM that nothing about a 13-year-old boy living his truth and realizing his identity is against real family values.
