ABC Releases Doc on Trans ‘Tupperware Queen’ Jennifer Bobbi For Spirit Day

“I do think that my transition was a major contributing factor to the decline in my business,” Bobbi said in her interview with ABC News.

Joining in on the LGBTQ Spirit Day festivities, ABC News released a new documentary short Thursday, on trans woman and former drag queen Jennifer Bobbi. Titled Unsealed: The Story Behind Long Island’s Tupperware Queen, the documentary follows the 49-year-old’s rise and fall from fame as drag Tupperware extraordinaire Aunt Barbara and everything in between.

Bobbi was at the height of her career in 2013, where she sold hundreds of thousands of tupperware and raked in millions. But as soon as the brash and sassy queen came out as trans in 2015, her reputation nosedived, with her business shortly following.

“I do think that my transition was a major contributing factor to the decline in my business,” Bobbi said in her interview with ABC News. “Aunt Barbara’s all about helping people forget their problems, [but] they don’t want Aunt Barbara to come to their house with a problem.”

Bobbi continued, “It’s all fun and games when you’re perceived as a man dressing as a woman but you don’t want to be a woman. But when you’re biologically a man and internally and innately you’re a woman, then it’s not so funny anymore.”

A story of enduring perseverance for all of trans youth, Unsealed and Jennifer Bobbi’s transition are just one of many stories being heard for GLAAD’s 2017 Spirit Day. Other celebrity participants include Celine Dion, Britney Spears, a slew of major television shows and hosts, in addition to the entire New York Yankees.

Spirit Day began in 2010 after a high school student shared the idea via Tumblr following the suicide deaths of several LGBTQ youth. The day acts as “a means of speaking out against LGBTQ bullying and standing with LGBTQ youth, who disproportionately face bullying and harassment because of their identities. Pledging to go purple on Spirit Day is a way for everyone – forward-thinking companies, global leaders, respected celebrities, neighbors, parents, classmates, and friends – to visibly show solidarity with LGBTQ youth and to take part
in the largest, most visible anti-bullying campaign in the world.”
